Stuck in a spasm? Can’t stand up straight? Your back isn’t broken—it’s in panic mode.

The “Sniper Shot”

One minute you were bending over to tie your shoe or lift a box, and the next, it felt like you were shot in the back. You dropped to your knees. Now, you can barely walk, you’re leaning to one side, and every tiny movement triggers a violent spasm. This is Acute Mechanical Back Pain. It is terrifying, but it is rarely dangerous. Your brain sensed a threat to your spine—maybe a small shift or a sudden load—and it slammed the “Emergency Brakes.” To protect your spine, your brain signaled the surrounding muscles to contract and create a natural splint—but it hit the panic button, overcompensating and leaving you stiff and immobilized.

Bed Rest is the Enemy

Your instinct is to crawl into bed and not move for three days. Do not do this. Bed rest convinces your brain that the injury is severe, causing it to tighten the muscles more. It also causes the joints to stiffen (rust). The fastest way out of pain is to find a “Position of Comfort” to calm the spasm, and then start gentle movement immediately. “Motion is Lotion.”

The Drive Wellness Protocol: Turn Off the Alarm

Phase 1: De-Threaten (The 90/90 Position)

We need to show your brain that you are safe. We often start with the “Z-Lying” position—lying on your back with your legs up on a chair. This takes all the tension off the Psoas and lower back muscles, allowing the nervous system to finally unclench the fist.

Phase 2: Desensitization (Breath & Rocking)

Pain causes you to hold your breath, which fuels the panic. We use diaphragmatic breathing and gentle pelvic rocking to soothe the nervous system. We are whispering to your back muscles: “It’s okay to let go.”

Phase 3: Re-Introduce Walking

Walking is the best medicine for a thrown-out back. It engages the core gently and flushes the inflammatory chemicals out of the area. We get you upright and moving with confidence as soon as possible.

We know the standard healthcare experience: crowded waiting rooms, rushed doctors, and cookie-cutter advice. We refuse to operate that way.

We Listen

We dig deep into your history—not just “where does it hurt,” but how you sleep, how you drive, and how you work.

We Investigate

We don’t just treat the spasm. We analyze why the back panicked. Often, a moment of distraction or a weak core forced your spine to take a sudden load it wasn’t prepared for, causing the nervous system to lock down the area in sheer defense.

We Explain

We never leave you in the dark. Before we start treatment, you will understand exactly what is happening in your body and exactly how we plan to fix it.

“We measure our success by how long you stay pain-free after you leave us.

Frequently asked questions

Why is your initial assessment longer than a standard clinic visit?

Because finding the root cause takes time. We refuse to guess. We use that extra time to analyze your gait, posture, muscle firing patterns, and history. This detailed analysis ensures we identify the true mechanical cause of your stiffness from Day 1, saving you months of wasted treatments later.

Do I have to be an athlete to be treated at Drive Wellness Center?

Not at all. We define an “athlete” as anyone who needs their body to function—whether you are a pro runner, a tradesperson, or a parent. We treat your injury with the same intensity and biomechanical detail as we would a professional athlete, ensuring you get back to your life as quickly and safely as possible.

Should I use heat or ice for a pulled back?

For the first 48-72 hours after throwing your back out, ICE is usually better to reduce acute inflammation and numb the sharp pain. Heat feels good, but it can sometimes increase inflammation in a fresh injury. After 3 days, or for chronic stiffness, heat is preferred.

I can’t stand up straight. Is my back broken?

Likely not. That “locked” hunched posture is called an “Antalgic Lean.” It is your body’s way of moving away from the pain. It is usually caused by a severe muscle spasm guarding an injury. We can help you relax that spasm and stand upright again safely.

How long does a sprained back take to heal?

Acute muscle spasms often calm down significantly within 3 to 7 days with proper care. However, the underlying tissue healing takes 4-6 weeks. Our goal is to get you out of pain quickly, then use that healing time to strengthen your core so it doesn’t happen again.
